Intertwined

20x20, oils

high gloss varnish

I used a portion of a photo taken many years ago in Nova Scotia of some old elm trees that had succumbed to age. The hot sun was streaming through the gnarled branches, and a halo surrounded the orb as it made its way toward the horizon. There is something sad but stately about old trees that have died but are making one last stand. The tree was cut down not long after this was painted. But this patriarch had left some flourishing offspring, and even some grandchildren as a legacy to its majesty.
